The journey into motherhood was a dream I had cherished for so long, and the news of my pregnancy brought overwhelming joy. The initial months were filled with excitement, wondering about the gender and name of our soon-to-arrive child. However, the course of our journey took an unexpected turn during the fourth month.
A routine checkup revealed abnormalities in our baby, Heliay, leading to a 3D ultrasound for a more in-depth examination. The results painted a challenging picture with deformities in her hands, feet, eyes, mouth, nose, and ear, attributed to Amniotic Band Syndrome. Despite the doctor’s suggestion of abortion, my spouse and I chose to continue the pregnancy, holding onto hope.
Heliay entered the world on August 21, 2015, and the initial days were marked by surgeries to address her conditions. Our decision faced criticism, but we stood firm, embracing Heliay’s uniqueness and navigating the complexities of her medical needs.
Heliay’s journey involves ongoing therapy, surgeries, and persistent challenges, but she consistently defies obstacles, becoming a teacher of invaluable life lessons about the preciousness of every moment. Despite societal judgments, we have chosen to include Heliay in every aspect of our lives, celebrating her individuality and treasuring each moment.
This story stands as a testament to the power of love, resilience, and the unwavering commitment to providing a chance at life, regardless of societal norms.
